Guide To Extract Jelly Bean FTF Files for Xperia

I required to extract Sony Xperia M  (C1904, C1905) FTF files to get the stock wallpapers and ringtone files, I decided to extract the FTF using the procedure listed here (which is for ICS), as Xperia M comes with Jelly Bean, the procedure is bit different here, so I write up this guide on how to easily extract the FTF files and see the contents of the file for Jelly Bean Version.

Files and Tools required for extracting.

1)     FTF File of your Xperia Device ( You can download from XDA Developers Forum)
2)     7zip extract Software (Google it to download) – Install on your PC
3)     Flash Tool, you can Download it from here - Install on your PC
4)     EXT2read or ext4_unpacker Tool to extract the .ext4 files (Click Here to Download)

  • First place the FTF (device firmware file) in a folder and extract the file using the 7zip software.
  • Open the extracted folder and check if you have the system.sin file, check the size of the file, it should be a big file (but not 0kb file)
  • Open the Flash tool, Click on Tools----> Sin Editor
  • Browse the system.sin file from the extracted FTF folder
  • Click on Extract Data
  • Allow the Flash Tool to extract the data, it will take 3-4 Mins to extract the sin file, wait for the flash file to display the following line.
  •
  •
Extraction finished to C: \Downloads\Xperia\system.ext4 line, sample looks like below.

30/042/2013 14:42:18 - INFO  - <- initialized="" is="" level="" span="" successfully="" this="">
30/042/2013 14:42:18 - INFO  - Flashtool Version 0.9.12.1 built on 2013-06-04 22:50:00
30/042/2013 14:42:26 - INFO  - Device disconnected
30/047/2013 14:47:44 - INFO  - Starting data extraction
30/047/2013 14:47:47 - INFO  - Generating empty container file
30/047/2013 14:47:47 - INFO  - File size : 1200 Mb
30/048/2013 14:48:22 - INFO  - Container generated. Now extracting data to container
30/050/2013 14:50:55 - INFO  - Extraction finished to C: \Downloads\Xperia\system.ext4

You should now see the system.ext4 file created in the FTF folder.

Now open ext2read tool and click folder icon, select system.ext4 file, select open and select the folder like (C:/) in the 1st White window and click floppy icon, now ext2read will save the system folder on C:

You should now be able to see the contents of the FTF file, the default location for wallpapers and ringtones of FTF file are as follows

root/etc/customization/content/com/sonyericsson/wallpaperpicker/wallpapers
root/media/

How To Fix mhotspot has Stopped Working Error Windows 7

I was trying to get my pc internet shared to my xperia android device, the two options i shortlisted was mHotspot and connectify, as connectify being limited and requires a purchase, i thought to give a try of mHotspot which seems to be free.

The installation of mHotspot was successful but i couldn't launch the application, it immediately crashed upon opening stating that "mHotspot had stopped working and needs to close.

I followed the instructions posted on mHostspot knowledgebase to enable Microsoft .net framework 3.5, but still the crash continued,

Here is how i got mHotspot working without crashing on windows 7 PC

I saw that my windows firewall service is under disabled mode. This is the main reason for the mHotspot to crash, i went ahead and enabled the windows firewall through services.msc and started the firewall service and and launched mHotspot

mhotspot launched successfully on windows 7 without crashing.

This is my analysis about the crash.

When windows firewall service is under disabled mode, the Internet connection sharing is not possible, if you got to a lan adapter properties and try to enable the ICS, it would throw the following error, as mHotspot is based out of ICS, its causing the application to crash.

cannot enable shared access Error:0x80004005: unspecified error

So..simply

enable the firewall and start the windows firewall service through run--Services.msc and Windows Firewall.

Xperia Z 10.1.1.A.1.253 Update Fixes Wifi Issue

Sony Rolled out new firmware 10.1.1.A.1.253 4.1.2 Jelly bean update to Xperia Z Devices today.
This update is compatible for both Xperia Z C6603 and C6602 devices.

Majorly This Update Fixed the frequent dropping of WiFi connectivity and made improvements when it comes to performance and stability of Xperia Z when compared to the stock version of the jelly bean.

Just went through the upgrade of 10.1.1.A.1.253 through PC Companion, it was successful.
I saw few members reporting the failed boot up of Xperia Z or Xperia Z just dont start up after 10.1.1.A.1.253 update through PC Companion, do not panic!

The solution for not booting up is to reinstall the 10.1.1.A.1.253 version through PC companion, you can get the link to the reinstall software the Sony PC.

Alternatively, if you would like to download the FTF file of 10.1.1.A.1.253 for flashing through flash tool, you can follow this link and download it.

Where to Buy Mobile Touch Screen and LCD Replacement Parts

This post is all about where to buy the mobile touch screen and LCD replacement parts for a cheaper price for all the smart phones right from sony xperia to nexus, iphone, samsung and HTC. It is quite obvious that, the touch screen digitizers or the lcd screens of the mobiles will break out some day as we mishandle them.

The easiest and the most cheapest way to replace the touch screen digitizers and the lcd replacement parts is, through sourcing the parts from china.I recently broke my Tipo St21i touch screen digitizer as well as lcd, these two parts costing me almost the price of the mobile phone when i inquired in sony service center, so i decided to source these parts from china and desperately wanted to get this mobile working.

At this point i strongly feel that touch screen digitizers and lcd's can be replaced very easily as they have a connector plugins.

Now, where to get these mobile replacement parts sourced.?

The only one stop trading site is Alibaba and Aliexpress, visit these websites and search for your mobile replacement parts, you will find many number of suppliers who actually trade the replacment parts for the smartphones at cheaper prices. I visited this store in aliexpress to get the touchscreen digitizer for st21, where i got it for around 14$

The next question in your mind would be how about the shipping cost and reliability?

I first suggest to get in touch with the supplier of the store through the trade manager or web based trade manager  and then finalize the price and go for a free shipping either through Hong Kong Post or Free Shipping to India (World wide) Via China Post Air Mail.

As the LCD's and the Touch screen digitizers are light in weight and mostly the hong kong sellers are reliable sellers, this will be a hazzle free shopping at Alibaba or aliexpress, but do check the feedback score before making a purchase, its almost similar to ebay.

The delivery time is 15 days on normal working days and during festival season it may end up from 15-30 days, but its worth wait.

I got my tipo working in just 15$, where i had to spend almost 90$ at sony service center..Good Deal!
Give a try at Alibaba or Aliexpress
